A truck waiting. A forklift that needs to work. A delivery that cannot move until both do their part.

Sometimes, the difference between a smooth shift and a frustrating one comes down to a machine starting when it should. Because behind every delay is a driver waiting, an operator trying to do their job, and a schedule that someone is working hard to keep.

This , we are thinking about the parts of the transport industry that rarely get noticed. The forklifts moving pallets, loading trucks and keeping goods flowing between one point and the next.

When equipment works as it should, people can focus on their work, deliveries stay on track, and the next person in the supply chain can do their part.

It might not make the headlines, but it makes a difference to someone’s day.

Meet the reach stacker.

From moving containers to repositioning them in busy ports, depots and rail terminals, this machine plays a bigger role in transport than many people realise.

When a reach stacker stops, the impact goes beyond the machine. Trucks wait, rail movements can be delayed, and valuable yard space gets tied up.

That’s why supplying the right equipment matters. It starts with understanding the operation, the conditions on the ground and what it takes to keep things moving safely and reliably.

This Transport Month, we’re recognising the equipment and the people behind the handovers that keep our supply chains moving.

A forklift does not operate in isolation. It keeps cargo moving between handling points, trucks and rail.

During our recent inspection of two 3 ton forklifts with Masslift Africa , we looked beyond the equipment. We listened to operators, worked through their questions and shared practical guidance.

Because a specification sheet tells you what a forklift is designed to do. The operator knows what the job demands on the ground.

A forklift inspection is about more than the machine.

We were on site with Masslift Africa inspecting two 3 ton forklifts, but just as importantly, we listened to the people operating them.

Questions were answered on the spot. Concerns were raised. The operators got clarity on the equipment they use every day.

That matters.

A safer, more reliable transport system is built through these practical moments too. When people understand their equipment, they can use it correctly, spot issues earlier and keep operations moving.

Thank you to the Masslift Africa team and the operators for being open, engaged and willing to learn.

Good equipment matters. So does the person operating it.

Reliable forklifts protect turnaround times and keep the operation moving. Unreliable ones quietly erode schedules and margins.

This week we are on site with Masslift Africa inspecting the forklifts we supplied to a client. These machines form a key part of their daily rail operations.
Our role is straightforward: make sure the right people are looking at the right things, and that what is found does not stay locked in a report.

Tomorrow: the walk-around that starts every serious inspection.

What happens when one part of the freight journey slows down?

It rarely stays in one place.

A truck can be ready, but if the rail connection is delayed, cargo waits. A port can be operating, but if cargo cannot get there efficiently, the wider journey still suffers.

South Africa’s freight system depends on road, rail, ports, pipelines and air freight, each serving a different purpose.

The opportunity is not to make every mode compete.
It is to make the connections between them work better.

Because freight does not move in isolated pieces. It moves as a journey.

That is the side of transport we work in every day.

Ten forklifts. Three sites. Two days.

But a successful delivery is not just about getting ten machines off a truck.

It is making sure the right forklift reaches the right site, at the right time, ready for the people who actually need to use it.

Across these deliveries, seven 3 ton and three 5 ton forklifts were matched to different operational requirements. Behind every arrival were site arrangements, equipment checks, handovers and teams coordinating to make sure everything came together.

The real work is everything that had to go right before they got there.

A fitting way to close Procurement Excellence Month and a reminder that good procurement should make life easier on the ground.

For those working on site, what tells you a supplier genuinely understands your operation?

“We should just go with the cheapest one.”

“We have plenty of suppliers, so we’re covered.”

“Procurement can handle it once we know what we need.”

“The PO is out. Job done.”

They sound harmless. Until they are not.

The cheapest option misses the deadline. The supplier cannot meet the actual specification. The solution arrives but does not work the way the operation needs it to.

That is when a procurement decision stops being a procurement problem and becomes an operational one.

Good procurement asks the uncomfortable questions earlier.

What do we actually need?

Can this supplier deliver it?

What happens if something goes wrong?

And did the value we were promised actually make it into the operation?

A quote can tell you the price.

It cannot always tell you the cost of getting the decision wrong.
