A project from the archive (2006) but perhaps more pertinent now than ever, this development explores the potential for affordable, compact inner city living. Located behind a heritage protected Victorian façade on Hobart’s Liverpool Street, are six compact apartments, a small commercial space, car parking and a communal roof garden. From their compact footprints, each apartment strives for spatial opportunities, natural light, and elegant functionality – proving that thoughtful design and building recycling can begin to address the challenges of sustainable and affordable living.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for our presentation and Q&A on affordable housing, as part of Open House Hobart. It was an engaging and insightful discussion on the realities of responding to the housing crisis in Tasmania. We’re proud to be working together with The Young Group to create homes that maximise liveability and amenity at a more attainable price point while fostering an inclusive and connected community. A special thanks to the Hon. Marcus Vermey MHA and CEO of Master Builders Tasmania, Jenna Cairney for their valued support and contributions to the conversation.

1+2 are honoured to receive the Australian Institute of Architects Tasmanian Chapter Award for Educational Architecture, recognising our project Alma Street Childcare Centre.
We would like to thank our brilliant client for their leadership and collaborative approach, and their willingness to engage in a consultation process focused on high-design value outcomes.
We would also like to recognise the dedication and professionalism of all project management, specialist consultants and construction team involved.

Jury citation:

"Alma Street Childcare Centre is a vibrant and thoughtfully designed environment that fosters curiosity, play, and learning. The project’s intelligent use of colour reinforces its conceptual framework, creating an inviting and stimulating atmosphere tailored to its young occupants.

Natural light is a defining feature of the design, strategically introduced to enhance spatial quality, promote wellbeing, and create a bright, uplifting interior. This thoughtful approach ensures a dynamic and engaging environment, supporting both visual comfort and the children’s connection to their surroundings. Alma Street Childcare Centre exemplifies excellence in educational architecture, setting a benchmark for creating nurturing and inspiring spaces for children.”

Alma Street Childcare Centre

Designed for simplicity, durability, and inclusivity, the newly completed Alma Street Childcare Centre is a welcoming space for children, educators, and families. The architecture prioritises accessibility and child safety while fostering interaction, learning, and curiosity.

Flexible and built to last, the design embraces open, context-sensitive planning with a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainable materials. Thoughtfully positioned activity spaces maximise natural light and seamless connections between indoor and outdoor play areas.

This project delivers a high-quality community asset—where children feel valued, educators are inspired, and families are supported.
