THE PHILPLIGHTON COLLECTION / 09
TASMANIAN HOCKEY CENTRE
New Town, Tasmania / 2008
Designed as the central hub for hockey in Tasmania, the Tasmanian Hockey Centre sits between two international-standard hockey pitches.
The two-storey facility brings together player amenities, medical facilities and support spaces with a 600-seat covered grandstand, café, function rooms and hospitality areas.
The building responds directly to its position between the two fields, with clear circulation for players and an elevated view for spectators.
The use of durable materials and flexible spaces has allowed the facility to continue supporting elite competition, community sport and events for more than 15 years.

HAVILAH W**E BAR
Launceston, Tasmania
Havilah W**e Bar is located within a restored heritage building in the centre of Launceston.
The design retains the character of the existing building while introducing a contemporary interior for the w**e bar and restaurant.
Careful use of materials, colour and lighting creates a warm and intimate setting, with the original character of the building remaining an important part of the experience.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful intervention can add value to an existing building without diminishing its character.

COMMUNITY HOUSING — NAGLE PLACE
Glenorchy, Tasmania
Nagle Place provides 20 contemporary two and three-bedroom homes for Homes Tasmania.
The project responds to a challenging sloping site, with the design carefully arranged to make efficient use of the available land while providing comfortable and practical homes.
Private outdoor spaces and considered planning help each dwelling make the most of its setting.
The result is a medium-density housing development that works thoughtfully within an established Glenorchy neighbourhood.

WEST PARK BANDS ROOMS
Burnie, Tasmania / 2023
A considered response to a challenging site.
For the University of Tasmania, the new Bands Rooms provide a purpose-built home for the Burnie Brass Band and Burnie Highland Pipe Band, set within the rugged terrain of West Park.
The design works with the site to create a durable, welcoming place for rehearsal, performance and community.

SPREYTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
Spreyton, Tasmania / 2021
The existing landscape, including the large established trees, became a guide for the design.
At Spreyton Primary School, the courtyard beneath the trees creates a protected outdoor learning space, extending the classrooms into the landscape and connecting learning, gathering and play with the outdoors.
Generous glazing, natural timbers and a restrained material palette strengthen this connection, adding new opportunities for exploration and discovery while adding value to the existing school environment.

MYSTATE BANK ARENA
Glenorchy, Tasmania / 2021
An existing venue; reshaped and adding value for what comes next.
Working within the established arena, the project brings together sport, entertainment, spectators and public spaces, while improving the way the venue works for both its operators and visitors.
The result is a more functional, connected and welcoming venue, capable of supporting a broader range of events and uses.

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA STADIUM GATES
Launceston, Tasmania / 2018
Three existing 19-metre steel roof trusses were given a new role at the entrance to the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston.
Retained and repurposed as the structure for a new cantilevered canopy, the trusses create a sheltered and distinctive arrival point for visitors.
An established tree was also retained, with the canopy designed to work within its existing root zone.
A new entrance, shaped by what was already there.

SCOTCH OAKBURN COLLEGE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Newstead, Tasmania / 2009
A school designed to change with the way it is used.
The Middle School was designed around flexible learning environments, with operable walls, open sightlines and shared spaces allowing the school to move between individual learning, small-group collaboration and larger teaching environments.
More than fifteen years on, the building continues to support the changing needs of its students and teachers.

TAS TAFE AGRICULTURAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
Burnie, Tasmania / 2023
Set within the working landscape of Freer Farm, the Agricultural Centre of Excellence brings agricultural education into direct connection with its surroundings.
Rammed earth, timber and Corten steel reflect the character of North West Tasmania, while the distinctive cattle-grid façade provides solar shading and privacy.
Three years on, our work at Freer Farm is continuing.
We have been engaged to design an addition of staff accommodation to the centre, extending the project first delivered with TasTAFE in 2023.
The next stage is now underway, with completion scheduled March 2027.
