We are a virtual provider of premium, best practice bookkeeping services to small businesses. I get to do what I love each day, and have a business that allows me to spend time doing the things I love, with the people I love, including clients, my amazing team, and gorgeous family. At the end of 2020, it became clear that our previous business name, Oasis Bookkeeping Services, was ready for a change. Throughout 2020, we were able to support our clients in more ways than just data entry and compliance. We were able to provide that safe haven, that Oasis, to them, and their business, from this, The Business Oasis, was created. We love this change, and it feels so good to be more aligned with our core values of being heart-driven, deliver mind-blowing service, show strength of character in all that we do, and not to beat around the bush.

Ahhh, the glamorous life of a small business owner!

One minute you're making big plans for the future of your business.

The next you're resetting a password, looking for a receipt, answering a "quick question" and wondering whether you've actually eaten lunch.

And somehow that five-minute job from Tuesday is still sitting on your list on Thursday.

Sound about right?

I think we all have those weeks when we're doing a little bit of EVERYTHING.

The trick is noticing which things are genuinely part of running your business, and which ones you could make a whole lot easier with better systems or a little help.

Can we please stop feeling awkward about following up on unpaid invoices?

You've done the work. You've delivered what was promised. You've probably gone above and beyond to make your client happy.

And now you're sitting there wondering whether sending a payment reminder will make you seem pushy!

I see this with lovely, hardworking business owners all the time.

Of course, there are genuine reasons why payments sometimes get delayed, and there's always room for a little kindness and understanding.

But following up on money you're owed is a perfectly normal part of running a business.

One thing that can really help is having clear payment terms from the beginning, along with a consistent invoicing and reminder process.

That way, you're not having to work up the courage to send an awkward email every time someone forgets to pay!

You deserve to be paid for your hard work. 💛

Can we talk about the guilt that sometimes comes with taking time off when you own a business?

You finally have a free afternoon, and instead of enjoying it, you're thinking about the emails you could be answering or the work you could be getting ahead on.

I know this feeling too well - I think most business owners do.

What I remind my clients is that part of building a successful business is creating something that gives you the freedom to enjoy your life outside of it.

And yes, the financial side plays a part in that.

Knowing what you can afford, having systems that keep things ticking along and being confident that your business can handle you stepping away for an afternoon.

That kind of freedom is worth planning for!

You don't have to wait until absolutely everything is finished before you deserve a little time for yourself.

(Because let's face it, when you're running a business, is everything EVER finished anyway?!)

The accounts are reconciled. Payroll is sorted. Money is set aside in the correct accounts. Everyone knows what's coming up.

Beautiful! Stunning! Gorgeous!

I know there's nothing particularly glamorous about having tidy books and good systems.

You probably won't be celebrating them with a bottle of ch*****ne (unless you want to, I won't stop you!)

But goodness, they make running a business easier.

Acknowledge the value of having things ticking along in the background, especially when you've got so many other things demanding your attention.

At The Business Oasis, that's a big part of what we want for our clients.

Ooh, here's one worth thinking about.

Having a big, reliable client can be WONDERFUL for business.

But what happens when that one client makes up a huge chunk of your income?

Perhaps they've been with you for years, everything is running beautifully and you've never had a reason to worry.

That's lovely, of course!

But businesses change. Contracts finish. People retire. Budgets get tightened.

And sometimes things change completely out of the blue.

I'm certainly not suggesting you should worry about losing a great client.

What I would encourage you to do is have a look at how much of your revenue comes from your largest customers.

Would losing one of them leave you in a difficult position?

If so, perhaps it's worth thinking about how you could build a little more security into your business over time.

A good business relationship is worth celebrating. So is having a plan if things change.

If someone offered to take ONE job off your hands tomorrow, what would you choose?

Managing the inbox?
Invoicing?
Marketing?
Payroll?
Something else?

I'm a big believer in getting honest about the things that are eating up your time, especially when they're stopping you from doing more of the work you actually enjoy.

Sometimes there's a simple system that can help. Other times it's worth getting someone else involved.

When was the last time you reviewed your pricing?

And I don't just mean having a quick peek at what your competitors are charging - I'm talking about sitting down with your actual numbers and looking at what it costs to deliver your product or service today.

Because chances are, a few things have changed since you first set those prices.

Maybe your suppliers have increased their rates, wages have gone up, or you've invested in better equipment and systems.

And if your pricing hasn't moved with those changes, there's a chance your profit is taking a bit of a hit.

It's worth having a proper look.

You might find your pricing is spot on. Or you might discover it's time for a few adjustments.

Either way, knowing where you stand is a pretty good feeling!

It's only $29 a month...Until you realise you've got seventeen different subscriptions coming out of your business account! 😂

And look, I'm all for a great bit of software that makes life easier.
We use plenty of fantastic tools ourselves at The Business Oasis.

But every now and then it's worth taking stock.

Are you still using that app you signed up for six months ago?
Do two of your subscriptions essentially do the same thing?
And oops did that free trial turn into a monthly payment?

The lesson is, check your recurring expenses.
You might find some money that could be put to much better use elsewhere in your business.

You wouldn't believe how often I hear this from business owners who are worried they should already know the answer to something financial.

But here's the thing. You're an expert in what YOU do. You don't need to be an expert in bookkeeping as well!

Whether it's understanding a report, wondering where all your profit has gone, or trying to make sense of something in Xero, I would much rather you ask than spend another week worrying about it.

And I absolutely love those moments when something finally clicks for a client.

So please, never feel embarrassed about asking questions. That's what we're here for!
