Energy becomes data centres’ biggest bottleneck

Data centre developers are finding power harder to secure than land.
AEMO forecasts data centre electricity use in the NEM to rise from about 5 TWh today to 34 TWh by 2035–36.
For business energy buyers, the pressure comes from more large users competing for generation, firming and network capacity. If supply fails to keep pace, the risk to electricity prices remains on the upside.

Network costs remain a business electricity risk

The AER’s preliminary decision is a reminder that your contracted energy rate is only one part of your electricity bill.
Network charges can move separately from wholesale prices. The decision also shows that additional network costs do not automatically get passed through to customers.
