Chris Edwards here with Tricor Wellness, and thank you so much for having me on the presentation today. I'm excited to share what's been going on down here in Southwest Florida. We are down in the United States, in Florida, in the Southwest region. So, Naples, Fort Myers and Bonita Springs. Let's talk about some of the really big challenges in our industry.
Market Challenges and SeasonalityHigh real estate costs and seasonal demand fluctuations significantly strain profitability for local fitness operations. Businesses must address these overhead burdens to ensure sustainable year-round financial viability.Shifting to Consultant ModelsOperators should transition from selling individual training hours to providing comprehensive metabolic health advisory services. This shift increases member yield and improves long-term client retention strategies.Technology and Metabolic IntegrationAdopting the technology, business, and science framework allows facilities to offer scalable, data-driven wellness solutions. This modernisation bridges the gap between traditional fitness and longevity-focused medical care.

Independent. Franchisee. Corporate.
One of the biggest misconceptions in the fitness industry is that franchisees somehow have it easier than independent gym owners.
The reality couldn't be further from the truth.
Having worked alongside independent operators, franchisees and corporate organisations for more than three decades, I can confidently say there is no "easy" business model.
Independent gym owners invest their own money, secure their own finance, sign the leases, purchase the equipment, employ the staff and carry the entire financial burden of the business. Every decision and every dollar ultimately rests on their shoulders.
"Franchisees do exactly the same"
They also invest their own money. They borrow from banks. They sign leases. They employ local people. They pay wages, utilities, rent, insurance and rising operating costs. If business slows down, it is the franchisee—not the franchisor—who carries the financial burden.
Franchisees also pay franchise fees, marketing levies and technology fees while working within the framework of the franchise agreement.
Contrary to popular belief, franchisees don't automatically receive huge discounts, special pricing or guaranteed profitability simply because they belong to a recognised brand. They still face the same day-to-day financial pressures as independent owners and, in some situations, even greater ones.
Corporate-owned gyms operate differently again.
These clubs are owned by the company itself, with managers employed to run the business. Financial decisions, investment and strategy are generally made at a corporate level, creating a very different operating structure.
Different business models.
Different structures.
Different challenges.
But one thing remains the same.
Every club is trying to retain members, recruit great staff, manage rising costs and help more people become healthier.
The fitness industry doesn't benefit from creating an "us versus them" narrative.
Independent owners, franchisees and corporate operators all play an important role in getting Australians moving.
Rather than assuming one group has it easier than another, perhaps it's time we recognised the commitment it takes to own, operate or lead any fitness business.
The logo above the door may be different.
The pressure behind the door is often exactly the same.
