Five INTERPOL cybercrime assessments. One clear pattern.
Cyber-enabled financial crime in Africa is not necessarily becoming more diverse. It is becoming faster, cheaper, more scalable and harder to detect.
Across the assessments, familiar crimes keep returning — from business email compromise and online scams to ransomware, mobile-money fraud and digital sextortion.
What has changed is the enabling layer: commoditised cybercrime tools, social engineering, organised scam centres, and now AI-powered fraud and synthetic identities.
More digital access is creating enormous opportunity across the continent. But it is also expanding the attack surface for increasingly organised and scalable criminal networks.
