Ugly Cry, featuring sóleys first feature-length score, will have its world premiere at SXSW next month. Filmed in Los Angeles, it’s a visceral exploration of beauty standards in the modern era, filtered through the lens of a young actress who’s been told she has an “ugly cry.” Sóley’s score is dark, intimate and unsettling, mirroring the films themes.
It’s the directorial debut of Emily Robinson who also writes and stars (Eighth Grade, Transparent). It also features Ryan Simpkins (Fear Street: 1978, Brigsby Bear), Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building, Shaft) and Robin Tunney (By Design, The Craft, Empire Records).
Extra kudos too to three of the producers Jolene Mendes, Pablo Feldman and Sophia Sabella, who just picked up a Grammy for their work on Doechii’s Anxiety music video.
