Fruit-bearing art
Now on display in the Puff Adder walkway, the fruit-bearing arbour art of Oom Anton Roux transforms trees into patterned trellises and enchanting sculptural forms. At 86, Babylonstoren’s oldest team member, master pomologist and arbour artist, remains the creative force behind these living sculptures.
Working alongside him, horticulturist Comine Joubert found a kindred spirit. “Oom Anton became my garden grandpa,” she says. Over the years, he shared his deep understanding of trees and a love of the fruit-growing journey, from first bud to first bite.
These miniature trees, with boughs bent into forked shapes and woven into careful grids, still bear regular-sized fruit – proof that beauty and abundance can be coaxed from the same branch.
