Every water buffalo at Babylonstoren’s Rietvlei farm has its own personality. 🐃

Leonie Botha has a gift with newborn calves.

“The first time I enter a calf camp, I just stand dead still. After a while they recognise my voice and smell. Then they come closer and sniff at me.”

By letting them set the pace, she forms a special bond with them. Some calves become so attached that they find instant calm in her presence.

Today, on World Milk Day, this little one proudly wears his milk moustache.

“These calves really sneak into your heart. You can’t help it, you love them deeply.”

Not every bloom is meant to smell sweet.

Hidden in the cool, damp corners of Soetmelksvlei, the red stinkhorn reveals itself with a curious scent reminiscent of rotten meat – nature’s clever way of attracting insects to spread its spores. Its vivid scarlet arms emerge from a pale “egg”, unfolding slowly like the petals of a strange forest flower.

Beautiful. Bizarre. Entirely nature’s design.

Stretching into the weekend

Shed the outside world and find your rhythm in a guided stretch-and-breathe class, led by Babylonstoren’s resident yogis.

Sessions take place on weekdays at 08h00 and 16h30, and on weekends at 08h00, in restful spots around the farm. A chance to slow down, realign and breathe deeply – often to the soundtrack of turkeys gobbling nearby.

After your workout, treat yourself to a buffaccino made with our farm-fresh water buffalo milk, paired with a flaky pastry from the farm bakery – a fitting reward for showing up on the mat.

Book on our Events page.

This week’s comes from who has now stayed at Babylonstoren Farm Hotel an incredible 16 times.

From plunging into the Farmhouse vitality pool to moments in the Butterfly Room surrounded by books, butterflies and good conversation, every visit adds another special memory. Long lunches at Babel, wandering past the farm turkeys, and the warmth of familiar faces have made the farm feel like a second home.

“We love the farm, but above all the staff,” says Karen. Especially the warm welcome from Lionel, reception manager, whose words, “you are family”, make her feel special from the moment she arrive.
