We love litter. The vineyard kind.

Plant material covering the ground is one of the things the TruQuest team observes during our annual EOV monitoring.
Is the soil covered or bare? Are there living roots? Is there erosion? What plants are growing between the vines?

These observations become part of a much bigger picture of how our land is changing over time. Because when you farm regeneratively, what happens between the vines matters too.

The Secret is in our Soil.

There’s what we observe in the vineyard, and then there’s what science can help us understand.

Meet Dr Erna Blancquaert, viticulture academic and researcher at Stellenbosch University, and part of the ReGenW**e research taking place here at Hartenberg.
Through ongoing research and measurement, the project is helping us better understand how regenerative farming practices influence our vineyard system, from the soil and vines to the grapes and ultimately, the w**e.

Because regenerative farming isn’t only about what we do. It’s about understanding the outcomes.

Bare soil or covered soil? Living roots? Signs of erosion? Insects and worms? How many different plants are growing between the vines? There’s a lot to look for during Hartenberg’s annual EOV monitoring.

TruQuest returns to the same monitoring areas each year and records what they find using a consistent EOV methodology. By comparing these observations over time, we can begin to see how the land is responding.

Regenerative farming is about outcomes, not simply intentions. The Secret is in our Soil.

Yes, our soil smells. And we’re rather pleased about it.

During our annual EOV monitoring, the TruQuest team even picks up and smells the soil. That rich, earthy smell can be a simple clue that there is biological activity beneath our feet. Alongside this, they look for living roots, plant diversity, insects, worms and other signs of life.

Because healthy soil isn’t simply dirt. It’s a living system.

The Secret is in our Soil.
