For Madame, last week’s tasting at the Commanderie de Bordeaux Suisse Romande continued a relationship spanning more than four decades.

She was inducted as a Commandeur in 1981, following in the footsteps of her father, who was among the very first members when the order was founded after the war.

In the years since, she has travelled the world helping establish new Commanderies abroad, from Hong Kong to Singapore to the United States, carrying Bordeaux’s traditions to new audiences wherever she went.

We’re grateful to the Commanderie de Bordeaux Suisse Romande for hosting such a memorable celebration of Madame’s life in wine.

Maxime Bureau spoke about Glenelly’s wines and his grandmother’s journey from Bordeaux to Stellenbosch, a fitting follow-on to her own presentation of Pichon Lalande earlier in the day.

It is a story that now stretches across continents and generations, but it still starts in the same place: a deep respect for the land, the wine, and the woman who taught the family to see both clearly.

Last week, Madame May-Eliane de Lencquesaing presented Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande at a tasting hosted by the Commanderie de Bordeaux Suisse Romande in Geneva.

Her grandson Maxime Bureau followed by presenting the wines of Glenelly to the room.

At Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch, our 6,000 m² winery, completed in 2009, is designed around a simple principle: gravity.

Built into the slope across five levels, the winery allows grapes and wine to move naturally through each stage of production. This reduces the need for mechanical pumping, ensuring a gentler process that preserves the purity, structure, and delicate character of the fruit.

Our team picks on taste, not on numbers.

When the berries say they're ready, harvest begins. The grapes are hand-picked, gently crushed, and moved into stainless steel tanks where fermentation happens naturally.

Extraction is kept gentle: a maximum of two pump-overs per day, preserving balance over power. After fermentation, the wine stays on the skins for another two to three weeks to build structure and complexity.

Then comes the oak. Twenty-four months in 300-litre French barrels. The first twelve as individual variety components in 30 to 40% new oak, allowing each part of the blend to develop on its own terms.

After blending, back into barrel for another twelve months, this time in 70% new oak, letting the final wine knit together and refine.
The 2021 blend: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot.
Two years in the making. Worth every month.
