Meet the Team: Japie Roux

We’re excited to introduce you to Japie, a proud Somerbosch local whose dedication, craft, and heart shape every bottle produced on the farm he grew up on. 🍇

With 31 years in the wine industry, Japie serves as Winemaker and Owner, overseeing all winemaking processes while working closely with Marius on daily operations. From the cellar to the vineyard, and even the occasional maintenance project, his hands-on approach is at the core of Somerbosch.

His favourite pour? Chenin Blanc.

In Japie’s own words:
Working on the farm I was raised on is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every harvest is a chance to refine our craft and honour the land. I’m involved in every step of the winemaking process, ensuring quality and consistency. Beyond the cellar, I take pride in maintaining the estate. It’s important to me that everything reflects the care we put into our wines. At the end of the day, it’s about creating wines people can truly enjoy and remember.

When he’s not at the estate, Japie enjoys off-road biking through the mountains, taking in the natural beauty that inspires his work. His favourite spot on the farm? Anywhere with a view of the Helderberg.

We’re excited to share what’s been happening on the farm! After a fantastic strawberry season last year, we’ve refreshed the field and planted a new batch of plants, setting the stage for a strong upcoming harvest.

While we wait for early spring, you can still enjoy our delicious frozen strawberries, perfect for smoothies, desserts, or a sweet winter treat.

In the vineyards, we’ve begun planting cover crops as the cooler months settle in. This helps keep our soil healthy and prepares the vines for the next growing season.

As the pace slows, our focus shifts to preparation, laying the groundwork now for what’s ahead. Here’s to a productive winter on the farm 🌱

Food Conversation from the Chef: Soup Stew

As the cooler months settle in and we find ourselves drawn to fireplaces and a good glass of red wine, there are few things more comforting than a well‑crafted bowl of soup.

An old Italian proverb speaks to its quiet power: soup does seven things. It takes away hunger and thirst, fills the stomach, cleans the teeth, brings restful sleep and puts colour in your cheeks.

At the heart of every memorable soup lies the care of the cook. This care reveals itself in depth of flavour, richness of texture and the simple beauty of presentation.

Meet our Viticulturist/Owner: Marius Roux

We are excited to introduce you to Marius, an essential part of the Somerbosch Wines family. Marius brings dedication, craft, and heart to the farm he was raised on.

Specialty: Viticulture/Owner
Favourite Somerbosch Wine: Merlot

Marius looks after the day-to-day operations of the business alongside his brother and fellow owner, Japie. Maintaining client relations and lots of conversations with restaurant guests!

When Marius is not busy at the estate, he enjoys long walks on the beach and exploring nature on horseback.

Most beautiful spot on the farm: When reaching the back of the farm on horseback, as he gazes at Table Mountain.

The Heart of our Kitchen: Marchelle May-Hendricks 👩‍🍳

We are excited to introduce you to Marchelle, an essential part of the Somerbosch Wines family since 2007. With 30 years of industry experience, she is the heart of our kitchen and is known for her perfectly cooked fish and the dedicated, disciplined way she leads her team. As our Head Chef, Marchelle oversees everything from menu planning to daily operations, always striving to create a positive environment for her staff. When she is not busy in the kitchen, she treasures time with her family, enjoys quiet walks and finds time for journaling.

We asked Marchelle a few questions:
🍷 If you were a wine varietal, which would you be? Cabernet Sauvignon.

🐟 What is your favourite food and Somerbosch wine pairing? Any of my fish dishes with our Sauvignon Blanc.

🌳 Where is the most beautiful spot on the farm? Where I enjoy my morning coffee just outside the kitchen with my amazing Executive Chef and friend. We have a little bench under the trees where you can see the vineyards, mountains and people working or enjoying breakfast.
